The Great Jones Mystery Solved!
THE GREAT JONES MYSTERY SOLVED!!!
Life is funny…people say that all the time, don’t they? And life is filled with all kinds of funny people too, isn’t it? Fun-loving people, smart people, gifted people, strange people, kooky people…that’s what makes life so much fun, right? There are also people that touch your life and heart so deeply, they leave a mark…a mark that can stay with you forever - a mark of inspiration and a mark of invigoration.
Season 5 of American Idol had every character known to mankind. Yes, that season had it all. And that season, more than any other season, tugged at heartstrings the most. Why was that?
There were success stories that took our breath away – their stories were so enlightening, it changed how we felt about our own lives. Their stories made us believe in our own stories. Their stories made us try harder in our day-to-day life. And one particular man who had the guts to take the biggest chance of his life touched us the most, didn’t he?
Yes, Elliott Yamin tugged at our heartstrings more than anyone could have ever imagined. Not an eye was dry in all of America when his final farewell came up on our screens. Millions of us pulled thousands of tissues that night - make no mistake about it.
Elliott touched every soul in America as he sang to us week after week, month after month. We met a man who took a chance and left his hometown of Richmond, VA in search of a dream. Leave the comfort of the pharmacy counter behind? Leave the boys? Elliott, are you crazy? What were you thinking? But that’s the thing - he was thinking. And he was thinking big, too. We met a man and saw a man change right before our eyes in three months time. The man we met in February was not the same man we said good-bye to in May.
Elliott made us believe what he believed in his heart to be true. At first we didn’t understand it. Is he serious? But his hair? But his teeth? But…but…BUT NOTHING. That’s the point.
Elliott kept singing and he grew on us. And he grew…and grew and “like” grew to “love.” No matter where you went you heard somebody say, “Elliott Yamin? I love that guy!” He believed in his heart he could step on that Hollywood stage and make a difference in himself – it started from within. Elliott shared a part of his soul and he let us in. Did we think he would last as long as he did? No way. Was he the prettiest? No. The prettiest went home. Were his teeth the straightest? No. The straightest teeth went home. Was he the most charismatic? No. The charismatic went home. Was he the coolest and slickest? No. Even they went home. So who stayed? Who did we love? The votes answered that question.
Life is about taking chances. It’s about believing deep, deep down, you can achieve what you set out to do. It doesn’t matter if other people believe in you or not. YOU have to believe. And if you do, magic will happen. It just will…
Simply, Elliott Yamin is an American Idol. Did he snag the crown? No. Did he have to? No.
Elliott taught every young boy and girl and every man and woman that your soul speaks the greatest language – all you have to do is listen. It doesn’t matter if your teeth are straight or if your hair is shiny - that is not what life is about. Life is about setting goals, accomplishing goals and striving to be the best you can be. It’s about believing in your dreams. It’s about listening to the voice of your heart.
Elliott is the best role model I think American Idol has ever seen. Whether you voted for him or you didn’t, you can’t take anything away from this man’s hard work, determination, drive, and belief. You just can’t. It’s not for the taking.
Elliott Yamin is a winner - and not just an American Idol winner coming in third place. He’s THE winner. He won at his own game. And that’s exactly what he set out to do. Elliott is truly an inspiration who leaves behind a glorious mark. Through his beautiful talent of song, he spoke to millions of people, “If you have a dream, go get it!”
Elliott Yamin, the Great Jones Mystery, believed. And because he believed, we believed. Like the 1969 Miracle Mets …there’s no other way to say it, “You Just Gotta Believe!”
